Down to the Last Strike: A Six Sentence Story

I am participating today in the Six Sentence Story Thursday Link Up at Girlie on the Edge's blog.

The basic idea is to write a story consisting of six sentences only.  Each week a word prompt is given to base the story on. This week's prompt was: strike.

Down to the Last Strike.

Frank only understood one thing in his life, baseball; everything else was like watching a movie in one unintelligible language with subtitles in another unintelligble language.

Baseball had absorbed his life for too long now: obsessed with it as a kid, endowed with an incredible gift to play his favorite game on a high level, and then lucky enough to get drafted by his favorite team.

His luck and his signing bonus-grubbing wife ran out nearly simultaneously after a career-ending injury before his professional career really even started.

He stumbled at first but soon, Frank was making the transition from player to scout; until he got the news about his Dad's cancer.

Frank only understood one thing in his life, and that was baseball - everything he knew, his Dad had taught him; the greatest of those lessons was you play the game down to your last strike.

Frank knew that life wasn't all peanuts and Cracker Jacks, and was now absorbed with something more than baseball: rooting for the home team.

The difference: A Six Sentence Story

I have not participated in Six Sentence Stories at Girlie on the Edge's blog for some time now.  Each Sunday she gives a  prompt word and then later in the week posts a link to share the stories. This week's prompt word was guide.

The Difference

The sun was setting on the life of Edison Solomon, who had never really achieved the wisdom or ingenuity of either of his namesakes.   Solomon, a trust fund baby born in 1941, the same year Walt Disney released Pinocchio, who  had never learned to let his conscience be his guide or learn from his mistakes laid in his hospital bed wondering if he had many any difference in his life.  The wondering wasn't real, only something to pass his fleeting time away; he knew he had made no difference at all during the first and now final 80 years of his life.  Edison knew that the 8 weeks, give or take, he had left on this mortal coil was not nearly enough time to make up for his  misspent youth, middle age, and old age.   3 failed marriages had produced no offspring, which was good as 3 failed businesses  had produced no sizeable inheritance.  He had no time for religion in his life before this point. but when the doctor had asked him if he had wanted to see the chaplain he listened to his inner Jiminy Cricket for the first time in forever and said "sure, why not?".

Homeschool Argument

Yesterday morning I spent about an hour exploring other blogs from this years a to z blogging challenge.  One of the blogs I was looking at had a link to a blog hop called 6 sentence stories at a blog called Girlie on the Edge.  I had heard of all sorts of differnet story lengths but the concept still intrigued me.  So for fun, I jotted down a 6 sentence story and shared it with my family to mixed reviews.  The way the blog hop works is that each week a few days before the blog hop they give a prompt word.  You need to use the word somehow in the story (either as a word or as a subject or theme ). The word this week is right.  I wrote a quick story and will share it here now and link it to the blog hop on Thursday.

Homeschool Argument

"You may be right..."

"I am right."

"You may be right..."

"No, I am definitely right!"

'Stop interrupting me.  You may be writing out your math assignment tomorrow; Our computer isn't working."
