On Saturday, September 27th, Justin Verlander pitched the last game of an almost certain Hall of Fame career. He pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Tigers, including six strikeouts. This video of his last time leaving the mound as a professional ballplayer brings a tear to my eye each time I watch it. A perfect ending to a stellar career.
Baseball is not an individual sport, although individuals like Verlander. deserve the accolades they earn. But baseball is a team sport where only one team can win. The Tigers were losing this tribute game to JV when he left the game in the 6th. They were still losing in the 9th when Rookie Eduardo Valencia came to the plate with a man on base.
The ending was edited to remind the viewer of the emotional scene in Moneyball where the A's continue their winning streak dramatically.
