P is for Poet

#AtoZChallenge 2025 letter P

My A to Z Challenge Theme this year is the ABC's of me.  Each day in the month of April with the exception of Sundays I will be posting about one aspect of my life that begins with the letter of the day.

It's time for some  A to Z catch-up. , I am currently 2 posts behind.  The next letter is  P so let's get right to it shall we?

G was for Giraffe Lover

H was  for Husband of One Amazing Wife

I was for Iguchi Appreciator

J was for Jester

K was  for Kindergarten Clear

L was for Library Lover

M is for Muppet Man

N was for Narnian

O was for Optimist

P is for Poet

They say beggars can't be choosers.  I think the same logic applies to people who are behind on their assignments.  Instead of not being choosers, we can't be perfectionists.

So I'm just making a pastiche of some examples of my poetry for today's post.  If it's been on my blog or appeared somewhere else before I am also providing a link.

In 2023 and 2024 I participated in the Kid Lit Progressive Poems  as part of the celebration of April as National Poetry Month.  A progressive poem is ehre several poets take turns writing a line for that day's part of the poem.  I have included the 2023 poem in it's entirety with my contributions are in bold/

Raindrops, Moonseeds, and Dreams

 Suddenly everything fell into place
like raindrops hitting soil and sinking in.

When morning first poked me, I’d wished it away
my mind in the mist, muddled, confused. \

Was this a dream or reality, rousing my response?
The sun surged, urging me to join in its rising,

Rising like a crystal ball reflecting on morning dew.
I jumped out of bed, ready to explore the day.

My feet pulled me outside and into the garden
Where lilies and bees weave…but wait! What’s that?

A bevy of bunnies jarted and darted and played in the clover.
A dog barked and flash, the bunderstorm is over.

 I breathed-brave, quiet. Like a seed,
as the day, foretold in my dream, ventured upon me.

Sunbeams guided me to the gate overgrown with wisteria
where I spotted the note tied to the gate.

As I reached the gnarled gate, pollen floated like fairy dust into my face. Aaah Choo!
Enter, if you must. We’ve been waiting for you.

Not giving the curious note a thought, I pushed the gate open and ran through.
Stopped in my tracks, eyes wide in awe—can this really be true?

Huge mushrooms for tables, vines twined into chairs,
A flutter of fairies filled flowery teawares

With glazed nut cakes and apple blossom tea,
I heard soft whispers from behind a tree. Oh my! They had been “waiting for me!”

Still brave, but cautious, I waited for them.
Forested friends filled the glade. “You’ve arrived! Let the reverie begin!”

I laughed as my bare feet danced across the dew-soaked grass,
matching the beat of paws, claws, and wings—around me, above me.

Tea cakes and hugs, twice all around, then silly games and races ’til the sun slid down,
Moon shared a warm wink, and showered moon-seeds over earth’s precious ground.

A few years ago I did a holiday poetry reading for Christmas.  Here is the you tube video ...

Last Year for the Q day if the challenge, I wrote a poem:  \

According to Merriam Webster, A quatrain is a unit or group of four lines of verse.  I have decided to write the heart of my A to Z post in quatrains today.  I am following an ABCB rhyme scheme

My A to Z Q Post

The A to Z Challenge

Is a big to do

Each year I struggle

As I get to Q

My theme this year

Has been Holidays

I've tried to approach it

In some different ways

Each Day, save Sunday

Calendars I consult

And search for Holidays

That I can exult

When I find the occasion

That I like better

I match the event

With that day's letter

For example April 2nd

Was Children's Book Day

B is for Book

I put on display

On the days of the alphabet

That start with A, E, I, O or U

I created my own holiday

Don't ask Y, but it's true

Today's Holiday

Wasn't hard to find

It was Poetry

And the creative mind

But how would that match

With the letter Q?

I just scribbled out some

Quatrains for you

This has been Poetry Friday

And Also A to Z

Thanks ever so much

for joining me.

I am not entirely a rhyming poet.  I think all of my poems referenced here do rhyme.  I did do an Acrostic poem for O in this years challenge and while that did not rhyme it did follow a pattern.

SO to end this post I'll just jot some unrhymed lines and see if later I can make something more of it.

Twisting and turning
The parade passed through

An optical illusion or a deliberate lie
A furtive glance of desperation

Ignorance of the truth
disdain for the needy

The I doesn't see
That the me is beside myself
in myopic misery

A buffet of brutality
with extra helpings of apathy
washed down with righteous indignation

X marks the spot
where twitter once retweetd

Today is also Poetry Friday and since there is only a few minutes left in Friday, I will share a poem about Optimism and be back tomorrow to write about how I'm a poet.  The slacker in me wants juts to combine both but I think I can prevail.

OPTIMISM

Opportunities Present Themselves In Many Initially Simple Matters

Pessimists Turn Inner Memories Into Seeing Mirages

They Ignore Messages Indicating Successful Management

I Might Instead Secure Motivation

Motivation In Seeing Myself

Instinctively Moving Swiftly

Striding, Marching

Masterfully

N is for Narnian

When I made my list of A to Z attributes at the beginning of this year, it was just going to be on my blog page.  I had no intention of using the list as my theme for the A to Z challenge this year.  When I made that decision as I alluded to in the theme reveal, some of the entries were not suitable to full blown posts, and some were very similar which meant that the posts about those letters would cover similar material.  For example, I had J for Jester, N for Nincompoop, O for Original and T for Teller of Jokes, I am augmenting all but the first since after a while how many posts do you need explaining I'm a goofball when one random post will do the trick.

So instead of Nincompoop I went with Narnian.

I did encounter the chronicles of Narnia as a child.  I learned about them in high school.  They captivated me and soon their author C.S. Lewis was my favorit author and has remained so for almost 45 years.  I have written here multiple times about C.S. Lewis and Narnia and I certainly don't mean to regurgitate all of that for you now.

For most of the past 45 years I have reread all 7 of the Narnia books.  Some years reading them all twice, first in the order they were published and second in how they occur in Narnian time.  And yes I stop at the penultimate page of Lion Witch and the Wardrobe and read The Horse and his boy and then finish the last page and a half of LW&W.  What can I say I'm hard core.

For the past 2 years I have announced that my next A to Z challenge topic was going to be A to Z Narnia Characters.  The problem is I haven read all 7 Narnian books since 2022 and I was going to assign the characters and research my posts while reading.  I'm not saying that I will do Narnia A to Z next year,  I have some pretty good ideas for future challenges.

But I thought it might be fun off the top of my head to make an A to Z Narnian character list for this post.  Here I go ...

A is for Aslan

B is for Bree

C is for Caspian

D is for the Dufflepuds

E is for Euastace Clarence Scrubb (and he almost deserved it)

F is for Frank the Cabby AKA as King Frank

G is for  Glimfeather the Owl

H is for Helen the wife of the cabby and the first queen of Narnia

I is for

J is for Jewel

K is for King Peter

L is for Lucy

M is for the mice who chewed off Aslans cords

N is for Nikabrik.

O is for Old nurse (as in Caspian's Old Nurse)

P is for Puddleglum

Q is for Queen Susan

R is for Reepicheep

S is for Shasta

T is for Tumnus the Faun

U is for Uncle Mraz

V is for the  (Grand) Vizier

W is for the Witch

X is for

Y is for

Z is for

22 out of 26 off the top of my head is pretty good I guess.  If I did do  Narnia as my theme I would need to get creative with some of those letters.

A Quote To Start Things Off

I only like movies about real things, like the Muppets.  - Amy Roller

To say I grew up on the Muppets is  not really too much of an exaggeration.  I remember watching the first episode of the show when I was in Kindergarten and introduced to Muppets like Oscar the Grouch, Grover, Bert and Ernie, Big Bird, and a reporter by the name of Kermit The Frog.  The Muppet Show started when I began Jr. High and the Muppet Movie came out the summer before I started High School.  My grandmother took us to see it and it changed my life.

Amy had a similar epiphany with The Muppet movie and even had a stuffed animal Kermit which not only attended our wedding, but sat on the piano for all to see.

The day before our first daughter was born we went and saw the movie Muppets from Space.  Not a great movie, but just another example of how I can measure my life by the Muppets.  I don't really have much more to add so I'm just going to put this music video of Man or Muppet  on to end our time together.

My family loves libraries.  I grew up literally across the street from one.  Over the years I have written lots and lots about libraries.  To give you an idea of what me and my family do at libraries, I too a post from Jabuary of 2024 that was languishing in draft status finished it up and am inserting it below.  I'm putting it in italics so you'll know when I'm back.

Double Library Day

Today was my last school day off of school for winter break.  I decided to spend some of it on ad adventure.

First I went to breakfast with my wife at Allen's Corner Diner in Hampshire, Il.

Allen's Corner is an excellent spot to eat, but they accept cash only.  They do have an ATM on the premises, but I am not fond pf paying the  additional fees. Last year, we were on our way to being regulars there, (Amy and I dream of being regulars at a local place with atmosphere, And Allen's Corner diner has atmosphere in spades.) when we were both working at the same school in Hampshire.  Unfortunately, I am no longer working at the same school, so when we came in today, there was no shouting of Norm, or any other "regular" greeting.  We split a skillet and had a good time.

While we were at the restraunt, I looked up cities that were 60 miles or less than Hampshire.  I found a place called Rockton, Illinois and found out they had a library called the Talcott Free Library.  I headed over to Rockton after Amy went to her school to catch up on work before the students and teachers came back in force on Monday.

I got to Rockton before the library was open so I decided to go the extra few miles to the Wisconsin state border and make it a double library day by going to the library in Beloit.  The library in Beloit was also not open upon my arrival.  So I checked out some of the beautiful areas near the library.

The Library is located to  some sort of medical building that used to  be a department store.

I got to the library and decided to check out the children's section.  They had a section of A to Z books which I believe are called alphabets.

They also had what is called a library of things where you can borrow all kinds of things.  I was struck by the fact that you could borrow snow shoes. Amy and I went snowshoeing a few years in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and really enjoyed ourselves.  Maybe some day we'll make the trek tp Beloit and borrow us up some fun.

I really enjoyed the Beloit Library but it was time to get back to Rockton and the Talcott Free Library. Libraries were traditionally private and not just anyone could use them.  This article gives a good history of the first free libraries.

Rockton, Illinois is kind of a blink or you'll miss it border town.  I know because I've driven to Beloit many times, and blinked and missed Rockton.  I did like my time in downtown Rockton not only at the library but visiting some of the local haunts.  They had a very nice bookstore there and I had a good meal at a sit down restaurant before my double library day came to an end.

One of my favorite books with a cool cover at a Rockton Bookstore

Meanwhile back at the challenge ...

Our Local Public Library
Celebrating 150 Year Anniversary
January 2024

Our family used to do something twice a year during our homeschool days called library week.  Once each semester usually over Christmas and Spring Break instead of our regular school days we would visit libraries.

We would still do school but in a different format.  It is one of the things we liked best about  homeschooling and also some of our best memories as a family.

K is for Kindergarten Clear

Kindergarten clear is a phrase I made up a few weeks ago.  As soon as it left my mouth, I was pretty sure it would find a way to my blog, and here it is all the way to the A to Z challenge.  It's all I can do not to say, "You made it bill, now you're a law."

Before I tell you how the phrase originated, a little background.

For the past 2 years,  I had been a building sub at various schools in my district. This means that everyday I go to the same school each day and take the adventure Aslan gives me.  That is a Narnian way of saying I fill the most needed opening.

About a month ago things got changed up a little.  I got accepted for a long term sub position that started right after Spring Break ended.  For the 3 weeks before that I hopped back and forth between 4 different schools.  On my third day of this I subbed for a Kindergarten class.  This particular class had 23 students and on this day none of them were absent.

It was a good day, I enjoyed the students and they enjoyed me.  However if Kindergarten is something you keep score of, the Kindergartners probably won that day.  The real loser of the day was probably the room.  I tried to get it back in the order the teacher had left it, but there were just some things that I couldn't remember where they went.

I was back in the building 2 days later as a 1 on 1 aide in a special needs classroom.  I actually did that same position 2 more times before Spring Break started.  On my lunch break I tried to pop in to see the kindergarten teacher and mainly apologize for not leaving the room neater.

When I walked in she had all 23 students sitting exactly like they are supposed to doing exactly what they were supposed to be doing.  She asked me what I needed very pleasantly and I told her I had just subbed for her.  You could tell that the students were beginning to notice me and some were starting to greet me.  Before they could, she just looked directly at me and very pleasantly said "this is not a good time."

I turned around and went and ate my lunch.  On the last day I was in the building, I was in the teacher's lounger and a number of teachers were talking.  I got into the conversation and realized that one of them was the kindergarten teacher.  At some point I apologized for leaving the room not exactly as she had left it.  She apologized to me about being rude , explaining she had only just then got all 23 kids in order.

My reply, "I didn't think you were being rude. You were just being Kindergarten clear." Just like that, a phrase was born.

To me Kindergarten clear is when you are being direct, kind, caring and no nonsense at the same time.  When 15 kindergartners all try to help you use the smartboard at the same time this is a time to be kindergarten clear.

A point sheet is a tool that they use in schools to help children who are having issues with behaviors.  In each class or section they are in they get points for positive behaviors.  They go over their point sheet with a teacher or other staff member at the end of each day and if they have earned a certain percentage of their points for the day and or the week they get a prize or reward.

When I was subbing for a music teacher the  last 2 days before spring break I had a kindergartner on a point sheet.  He was trying to earn 1 point for listening to the teacher, another for being kind to other students, and a third for doing the work of the class.  He spent most of the class running on the risers that the teacher had left me a note that no students were to go on, and when he wasn't doing that he was saying awful things to other students.  I gave him only 1 point because the work of the class was singing and dancing along to videos which he was doing each time I redirected him from his other 2 activities.

I tried to be kindergarten clear with him each time on the riser, and each time he was mean to other students.  At the end of class I explained to him how he had only earned 1 point and with all the kindergarten clear I could muster, I explained that I'd be back tomorrow and I was sure he could do better.  On Friday he came back and he got 2 of his 3 points.

Kindergarten clear is not just useful  for kindergartners.  I used it just today with a 2nd grader whose class I drop into 10 minutes a day and later take that student and a few others for 30 minutes at a time of extra work in math and reading.  When I walked in today the teacher was collecting the spelling test and he had only written 1 word on the paper.  I'm not sure if he was doing something else during the test or not, but the teacher was asking him to pull the page out of his workbook and he was refusing to do so.

This was just my 8th day on this assignment but since I spend an hour and ten minutes with him a day we are getting to know each other pretty well. After seeing him refuse the teacher 3 times, I came up to him and asked him to take a walk with me.  We walked in the hall way to a bench by the office and I reexplained what his teacher had said, she wasn't mad at him, she just needed to collect the papers.  I asked him to write his name on his paper, which he did and I asked if I could rip out the page and he let me. As I did this I used my kindest voice while making it clear that when teachers ask for us to do something we need to do it right away.  We walked back in the classroom, he put his paper in the turn in bin and it was like the incident never happened.

I think this might be a good time to quickly segue to this weeks prompts at the Writer's Workshop

Here are this week’s prompts: (I am answering the one in bold)

  1.  Write a post based on the word genealogy.
  2.  Write a post in exactly eleven (11) lines (sentences).
  3.  Would you rather understand what everyone is thinking or see everyone’s future?
  4.  Start a post by pasting whatever you have on the clipboard and go on from there.
  5.  If you could have any person become a member of your family, who would you choose? Why?
  6.  If you were required to have a job of some type but you didn’t need the money from it to survive, what job would you choose?
I technically do not need the jobs I have to survive.  Therefore, I would say that I would choose the job I have now as a substitute teacher.  Not only does it give me a chance to be kindergarten clear.  But it is a job that I love and  also one that I do well.  It is a job that challenges me and also a job where I can challenge others.

G was for Giraffe Lover

H was  for Husband of One Amazing Wife

J is for Jester

I will use any excuse to play a scene from the classic Danny Kaye film the Court Jester.

I used to describe myself as a court jester in the wrong century.  When you think about it a  jester is just an indivdualized comic.

I like bringing my sense of humor to every occasion. I grew up watching the likes of Buddy Sorrell, Hawkeye Pierce, and Ralph Malph ( from the Dick Van Dyke Show, M*A*S*H, & Happy Days respectively.)  They were all great quipsters but they had a writing staff.   Just like I do my own stunts, I write, steal, or borrow my own material.

One if the perks of being a substitute teacher is you don't get annual reviews.  Maybe this is different in other districts, and maybe some people don't consider this a perk, but one thing I do miss from annual reviews was when my bosses would write how funny I was.  I know that this is probably what they  write when they don't have anything else substantive to say but  reading that I had a good sense of humor was almost as important to me as my annual pay increase.

At many of my jobs I have the opportunity to improvise and improve bits of comedy.  For example as a concessionist at a local movie theatre I do many of the same things multiple times a day like showing customers the sizes of our  drink cups. Many folks marvel at the size of our large cup so I told one customer that it was the only cup I knew that came with a diving board.  The next time a customer came in I changed diving board to life guard and that joke is the one I use now.

Some of my jesting falls into the categories of timely quips based on the situation.  Others have me using the same joke over and over to different audiences.  The only cup with a diving board started as the former and is now the latter. One of my favorite types of jokes are the kind that seem like a statement and you don't realize there a joke it's too late.  A dated example of this is when people might be talking about a recording artist and I might say I have all their albums.  Then after a beat, I would say, "They  called me the other day, they want them back. ".   Since albums are not what they used to be I  don't make that joke a lot anymore.  A similar joke to that is when I see some one with any type of Notre Dame gear, I may tell them that my Dad and sister went there, and then quickly add in, "that's how they met.".

Being a jester isn't all about jokes it's also about general merriment,  tricks, and enthusiasm.  When my son and I went to Joplin, Missouri to help provide tornado relief. We went in early August when the temperature could get over  100 degrees.  I would encourage everyone to drink water and make sure they had a water bottle.  Then I would say I was the hydration specialist and then add in the words "self appointed." At one point, our bus was having a little mechanical trouble and we had to make a quick stop.  I went to one of the teenagers and gave her a water bottle and said I was the hydration specialist.  Before I could say anything else she added in "self appointed." That's the kind of impact I  like to have.

Here is an example of the kind of  tricks I am talking about from a video I used in my vlog a few years ago:

Two aspects of my Jester personality that I bring to the blog are limericks, which I featured at the challenge 2 years ago and parodies which started this years challenge.

I know I jest got started, but I should probably let you get back to the challenge and get back to catching up.  To find more A to Z challenge entries click here.  To get back to the A to Z challenge blog click here.

Team Saturdazzle: The One With the C2E2 Droppoff and the Anniversary Twins

Another Saturday another Saturdazzle. The Chicago Comic and Entertainment Exposition  (C2E2)is this weekend. I went 2 years ago with my daughters as part of what I called a geek triathalon (comic book convention, dr who convention, and a Rennasaince fair). My daughters went to C2E2 again last year. Once was enough for me. (This was more due to the cost/enjoyment ratio than anything else.) My younger daughter and her friend dressed up
Last year so I drove them the hour into the city from our area and spent Saturday in the city.

I had a fun day as did they and this year Amy and I are going to celebrate our anniversary in the city and dropp off our older daughter to C2E2 Amy and I are dressed alike and look like we are visiting the big city from out of town which technically we are, we usually just blend in more.

A To Z update

As of today I am 1 letter behind as of tomorrow I'll be 2 letters back. I am not in a rush this year and am planning to complete the challenge. I'd like to read more of other people's entries which is still one of my favorite parts of the challenge.

I did post yesterday and today so I guess I could have done some alphabetical gymnastics to get those posts to match the letters of the day. I didn't want to play that way.

That's it for now I should be back today or tomorrow.  Whenever it is it will be Jest the right time.

Happy Anniversary to Marty!

Today Amy and I have been married for 27 years.  We are spring chickens when compared to Marty  and Clara whose romance begin for film goers 70 years ago today.  April 11th 1955 was the premiere of the film Marty starring Ernest Borgnine.

To celebrate this special event I have 5 videos t share:

1: An analysis of the film

2. An actor's remembrance of Ernest Borgnine

3. Borgnine's Oscar acceptance speech upon winning Best Actor for Marty

4. deleted scenes from Marty

5. Ernest Borgnine discussing the film

The film Marty has always been an important film to Amy and myself.  We first learned of it in the Robert Redford directed Quiz Show where the film Marty  is an integral part of the exposition of the main conflict of Quiz Show.  That led us to watching Marty which quickly became one of our favorites.  Now that we know that we share the same anniversary we may make watching it part of own celebration.

This is the 20th anniversarry of the Chicago White Sox winning the 2005 World Series. There were many new players  on the team that became instant White Sox legends: Bobby Jenks, Jermaine Dye, A.J. Pierzynski, Scott Podsednik, El Duque Hernandez, and # 15 Tadahito Iguchi

Iguchi was 30 years old when he came to Chicago after playing nine seasons with the Fukuoka Daiei Hawks.

In 2005 I had a partial season ticket package for the White Sox.  The Sox went 8-1 in games in my package and led their division from the beginning to the end of the season.  We know that had a lot to do with me, but it also had a lot to do with their 2nd baseman,

I tool my son Charlie to several games that year.  He was about 3 1/2 when he and I went for our first time that year.  We were sitting in the bleachers and there was a group behind us who were getting animated every time that Tadahit came to the plate.  They even had a cheer for him:

You Say Tada

And I say Hito

Tada

Hito

Charlie and I tried to imitate that cheer every game we were at.  He quickly became Charlie's favorite player.  We even called him Charlihito sometimes as a nick name. Some of my fondest memories are of Charlie in his Iguchi shirt.

Even though the above pictures were taken in the 2006 season, they communicate what it was like to have Iguchi in the fold in 2005.

tadahita was an excellent 2nd baseman.  Here's an amazing play from 2006.

H is for Husband

My A to Z Challenge Theme this year is the ABC's of me.  Each day in the month of April with the exception of Sundays I will be posting about one aspect of my life that begins with the letter of the day.  Today's letter is H so let's get right to it shall we?

G was for Giraffe Lover

H is for Husband of One Amazing Wife

My wife is  amazing and I am married to her. That makes me the husband of one amazing wife.

We were married 27 years ago this week. Our wedding reception was at a roller rink,  It was the wedding of Dave & Amy Roller, so it seemed like the best venue.

Our wedding was the first wedding we attended as a married couple.  The most recent wedding we went to was Our niece's wedding a few days after Christmas last year.  After the wedding Amy and I hung out at a mall and we did a little goofing around. There was a photo booth kiosk where you could get a comic book style cover with your picture on it.

Not much more to say after that picture.  To get back to the A to Z Challenge page click here.  To see the A to Z Master List click here.

My A to Z Challenge Theme this year is the ABC's of me.  Each day in the month of April with the exception of Sundays I will be posting about one aspect of my life that begins with the letter of the day.  Today's letter is G so let's get right to it shall we?

G is for Giraffe Lover

Exactly 10 years ago today my A to Z post was about giraffe poop.  My theme was nouns and each entry was about a person, place or a thing.  Giraffe Poop is a thing.

My favorite animal is the giraffe.  It hasn't always been my favorite animal.  This is because it wasn't until my earl 20's that I had a favorite animal.  Then I started hanging out with Sheryl Ryan.  I met Sheryl when she was a Junior in high school and I was a volunteer for Campus Life, a parachurch youth group.  We got to be friends and I would often hang out with her at her house.  It became obvious that her favorite animal was the giraffe.  She had a whole bunch of giraffe memorabilia in her room.

It was then I discovered that I did not have a favorite animal.  So I just stole hers.  That was the mid 80's now 40 years later my favorite animal is still the giraffe.  Yes, I once was fascinated by how they poop. But there is so much more to them than that.  I love that they don't make noises.  I love that they are majestic and awkward at the same time.  I love that giraffes newborn giraffes are about my size 6 feet.  I like how they eat leaves.  I'm just enamored with them.

I also love that I have visited many zoos over the years with family and friends and I have had many opportunities to share my love for giraffes with my family.  I love discovering what kind of animals my family loves. From wolves, to rabbits from snakes to elephants, from turtles to giraffes, learning about and loving animals is something I'm so glad to continue to share with my family.
